Tignes is a high altitude resort in the heart of the ski country of France (part of the Espace Killy ski area alongside Val d'Isere) and is one of the best all-year round resorts in the Alps. Off the slopes Tignes may appear somewhat drab and ugly. However, it offers everything a skier needs with restaurants and bars a plenty. Be warned though, prices in Tignes are more central London than rural France!

Megeve (Megève) is situated about 10 km off the main road from Geneva to Chamonix and is one of the most chic villages that one could hope to come across. Megeve is the main part of the Evasion Mont Blanc ski area - the 4th largest in France. There are three main ski areas; Mont D'arbois, Rochebrune and Le Jaillet, which offer 325 km of pistes and are served by 88 lifts.

The Evasion skipass also includes nearby Les Contamines (120km pistes) but you would need a car to get there. In practice for most holidaymakers Megeve is big enough. With the resort being relatively low, much of the skiing at Megeve (Megève) is on beautiful tree-lined slopes with spectacular views of Mont Blanc.

It is not surprising that ski terrain on the slopes of the tallest mountain in the Alps should be known as expert territory.

It is not surprising that ski terrain on the slopes of the tallest mountain in the Alps should be known as expert territory. Chamonix is on the 4,807-meter Mont Blanc, and adding to its legendary status, was the site of the first Winter Olympics. The first Olympians might recognize the stunning scenery but not the world-class infrastructure that has since grown around it.

Although Chamonix is known - and rightly - for its superb expert terrain and off-piste skiing, that's not to say that all skiers can't find plenty of snow to call their own. A high-altitude location, aided by the cooling effect of four glaciers, gives it some of the best snow conditions in the Alps.

Château MARJOSSE is a historical property located 14 km South of Saint Emilion, first built in 1782. It is surrounded by 40 acres of vineyards which sit on exceptional clay and limestone soils. Winemaker Pierre Lurton, born and raised in a neighbouring château, bought the property piece by piece, starting in 1991, and has been producing widely-acclaimed and sensibly-priced reds and whites since then.

There are vines young and old (even some planted in the 1920s!) of various grape kinds. Merlot, malbec, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon make up the red blend while the white mixes sauvignon blanc, sémillion and a touch of the very aromatic Muscadelle.
